The Colloquia was a collection of some fifty formal dialogues on a huge variety of subjects, including war, travel, religion, sleep, beggars and funerals; all written in a gentle, humorous, and somewhat ironic style. The editor of this edition, Schrevel, was a physician and scholar, born in Haarlem, and head of the college faculty of medicine at the University of Leiden in 1642.
