12mo. 133 x 75 mm. Faint dampstaining to upper edge throughout, a little thumbing to title and dust-staining to upper outer corner of some final leaves, otherwise internally clean and good. Contemporary blind-ruled calf with corner fleurons, joints rubbed, upper cover very slightly warped, a little rubbed, corners bumped, tail of spine chipped with lack, remnants of paper title label to head of spine. Manuscript ownership inscription in brown ink to title, 'Ex Libris bibliotheca presbyterialis Brittanno dunensis 1713', presumably Dumbarton Presbytery in Scotland, and 18th century inscription to half-title 'pret: 2 s'.
A Puritan Book of Common Prayer in Greek printed for the Universities and published in Cambridge at the height of the Protectorate. Translated by James Duport, Professor of Greek at Cambridge, and adapted from Petley's 1638 version, this verbatim translation of the Book of Common Prayer was intended mainly for use in the colleges and universities of the realm, and thus of very limited circulation. Dedicated to Gilbert Sheldon, then Archbishop of Canterbury, it is bound here together with Duport's translation of the Psalms, published by Field one year earlier. A scarce work from an interesting moment in British (religious) history.
