VAN SANDWYK, Charles

[Vancouver: Charles van Sandwyk Fine Arts, 2019]
8vo., cream hand-sewn card covers; pp. [viii], with rear cover folding; text printed calligraphically throughout, as well as watercolour illustration and publisher’s device to upper cover; as well as a further 8 in full colour throughout, all bordered in red; with numbered copper proof etching showing a dragonfly tipped-in to the inside front cover; fine.

A nostalgic work, derived from journal entries created by the writer while living on the tiny island of Tavewa, Fiji. Van Sandwyk had traveled to seek adventure and solitude in the footsteps of writers and artists who inspired him in his craft, and here he muses on his place in the world: “I dream of those who went before me”, he writes, “Robert Louis Stevenson in Samoa, Paul Gauguin in Tahiti… their brave talents broke tougher ground than any I have ever sought to tread. Yet ageless we are all.”
