Small 8vo., sage green cloth, lettered in red and decorated with the badge of the Women’s Land Army in gilt to the upper cover; lettered in red with publisher’s device to spine; together in the unclipped photographic dustwrapper (5/- net to front flap); pp. [vii], 8-111, [i]; with frontis repeating the dustwrapper photograph, and a further 63 photographs in black and white to rear of text; the final page with the sheet music for ‘Back to the Land’; the book very good, a little overall toning to paper stock, with some light spotting and offsetting to end leaves; and light sunning to both the spine and outer edges of boards; the good dustwrapper with some even shelfwear, heavily nibbled to spine with losses affecting text; and some marginal nicks, chips, creases and short closed tears to extremities.
First edition, published under the auspices of the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries. A complete record of the WLA, beginning with its inception in 1939, and illustrated with numerous photographs showing the important work of women during the war.
