Slag
8vo., publisher’s blue cloth, lettered in gilt to spine; together in the unclipped pictorial dustwrapper (£1.50 net to front flap) featuring a photograph by John Haynes; pp. [viii], 9-77, [iii]; a near-fine copy, just a hint of rubbing to the spine tips; the very good wrapper with a couple of marks, darkening and creasing to folds, and a little scuffed to the edges of the dustwrapper.
First edition, with the incorrect dustwrapper attribution cancelled by the publisher to the front flap.
The first published play by David Hare, the English playwright, screenwriter, and director whose many awards and achievements include numerous Academy and Tony awards, two golden globes, and stints on both Broadway and in London’s West End. Slag was written while he was working at Portable Theatre Company from 1968 to 1971, and was originally presented at the Hampstead Theatre Club. Based around three teachers at a tiny isolated girls' school, the biting satire follows the characters as they vow to abstain from sex in a protest against the abusive treatment of women by men. As their differing views begin to cause conflict, their neglected pupils dwindle to zero.
A very nice copy of the work which launched Hare’s career as a playwright.
