Manners from Heaven

8vo., publisher’s salmon pink wraps, lettered in black; pp. [viii], 9-138, [ii]; spine a little sunned, with some small marks to the lower cover; with some apparently early water damage causing a tide mark to the lower edge and corner of most of the text; annotated throughout with publisher’s corrections in black; very good. 

Proof copy of Crisp’s ‘Divine guide to good behaviour’, which contains instructions for compassionate and polite living. Some of the annotations appear to have been printed, while others have been added post-production, as evidenced by ink smudging, particularly to the title page, as well as to the margins in text. It is fanciful to imagine that the damp marking has been caused by a precarious cup of tea, knocked over during these precise musings. While most of the annotations are concerned with printer’s instructions, others concern grammar, and there are one or two passages completely struck through - presumably which did not make it to publication.
