A large, fine leather document folder; comprised of two lacquered boards (each 25.5 x 35.5cm) highly and elaborately decorated with intricate floral and leaf devices in black and gilt; central device of a blue flower with surrounding green foliage; joined by a black leather spine, the lacquering continuing to one side; to the other two brown leather document sleeves; some rubbing and scratching to boards and the paintwork beginning to peel along the backstrip; very small portions of the lacquer chipped; the leather a little rubbed and cracked internally, with some ink splashes and document wallets beginning to peel away; a highly attractive piece.

A wonderfully decorative document folder, with the Ganemede/Srinagar/Kashmir makers mark along with the number to the internal spine. Ganemede was a celebrated artisan, artist, and maker of handcrafted papier-mâché, lacquerware, and carved walnut furniture based in Srinagar, Kashmir, who was active between 1890 and 1930. Operating out of Srinagar (close to the Third Bridge/Fateh Kadal), he catered heavily to British military officers, tourists, and the colonial Anglo-Indian market.
