[HALLOWEEN] A collection of Halloween/Carnival Masks
Nine original handmade masks, one in paper, the remaining eight in cheesecloth, measuring between 18cm and 29cm in diameter, together with one cheesecloth hat, handpainted and stitched, with string fastenings and various types of hair added with glue; in varying condition, the paper mask rather creased, and the hat dirtied; others a little warped; very good survivals all the same.
A fascinating collection of Halloween costumes or Carnival masks dating from the late 19th to the early 20th century. Most have exaggerated features with holes cut for eyes and noses; some are quite terrifyingly lifelike, while others include eyebrows, moustaches, and varying types of hair, some horse, some likely human in origin.
With no identifying marks it is difficult to say when, or why these were created. While the exact purpose is unknown, the exaggerated features; weary men, blushing women and grotesque comic characters; mean that they may have been used in pantomime performances, or for early costume parties such as Halloween gatherings. They remain fascinating ephemeral objects which intersect the folk art, theatrical costume, carnival and early commercial halloween culture of the late 19th century.
Similar masks have been traced to Virginia at the turn of the century.
