Adiche was born in Nigeria and studied medicine at University before travelling to the U.S. for further education at Drexel University Eastern Connecticut State, Johns Hopkins and Yale. Initially writing poetry and drama, her debut novel Purple Hibiscus achieved great commercial success, and Half of a Yellow Sun followed three years later. Adiche spent four years researching and writing the novel, which centres on the Biafran conflict during the Nigerian Civil War, and incorporates many of her father's memories of that time period. The plot moves between the lives of several characters - Ugwu, a teenage boy who has moved from his village to work for Odenigbo, a university lecturer with revolutionary views; Olanna, the beautiful daughter of a wealthy Nigerian man from Lagos, with whom Odenigbo is in love; and Richard, a tall shy Englishman in thrall to Olanna’s sister - all of whom are affected in varying ways by the outbreak of the conflict. 

In 2007, the book won the Women’s Prize for Fiction.
