Secretarial copy of an ALS
Single folded sheet (18.5 x 22.5cm when folded), written in a flowing, secretarial hand on two sides (of four) paper blindstamped ‘Bath Fine’ to the upper left hand corner of each sheet; a few creases to edges, and a couple of small watermarks to the two lower corners; at one time folded into quarters; very good.
A very nice, likely contemporary copy of a letter originally written to a patron in November 1845 from Sanssouci royal estate in Potsdam, Germany. At that time, Humboldt was serving as a key scientific advisor and confidant to the Prussian royal family. At Sanssouci and the Orangery Palace, he enjoyed a close intellectual relationship with the Crown Prince (later King Frederick William IV).
While of course far less valuable than an original Humboldt letter, this seemingly unrecorded secretarial note would provide insight into the life and work of the German polymath, geographer, naturalist and explorer - depending of course on palaeographical skill.
