Clipped signature from an ALS

Clipped signature (11 x 10cm approx), inscribed by Gonne and dated below in a different hand ‘Captain C. M. Gonne, late R.A., 29 March 1909. A supporter of the militant suffragettes’ to one side; to the other, the remnants of a letter by Gonne are visible, which appear to describe the events of an imprisoned member of the suffrage movement, including “... & her screams wer heard / incessantly up to 8pm by / a suffragette friend of mine / who was confined in a / neighbouring cell. / From Superintendent Wells / & from the papers I learn / that a deputation is desirous / to be received by Mr. Asquith…” 

Captain Charles Masterman Gonne was a British Army officer of the Royal Artillery, horseman and author. A prominent supporter of women’s suffrag, he was active in the Actresses’ Franchise League and he was the husband of actress and suffragist Mabel Tuke. Tuke was arrested on several occasions for her militant activity, but it is unclear to whom the passage refers to.
