Many of the portrait photographs are here signed, and show the boys in school and sports attire, along with some in officer’s wartime dress. Schoolmasters are also pictured and, perhaps most notably, the album contains at least two references to Robert Graves; the first a known roundel portrait of Graves as a young schoolboy; the second is contained in a sports day programme dated Saturday November 16th 1912, which mentions a boxing match between the then-17 year old Graves and R. J. P Rodakowski. It is likely that Graves additionally appears in at least some of the additional group shots, though I have been unable to formally identify him.

Graves famously had a difficult time at Charterhouse, and was bullied for his German heritage. His full name, in particular, ‘Robert von Ranke Graves’, along with his outspoken and serious nature, led him to pursue boxing in order to respond to this persecution during his time at the school, and he was encouraged by his friend Raymond Rodakowski, whom he is here seen fighting against. He later became the school champion at both welter and middleweight.

Contained in the additional items of ephemera are:

An ‘Old Carthusian Dinner’ menu, dated Wednesday 12th December 1917 and featuring such delicacies as Sole au Vin Blanc, Scotch Woodcock and Bombe Glace, signed by many of the old Carthusians in attendance to the verso;

A Charterhouse Founder’s Day Dinner menu, dated December 14th 1920, including turbot and Gelée Dantzic, similarly signed by several of the Carthusians to the verso;

Two handwritten letters addressed either to ‘Vincent’ or ‘Vi’ on Charterhouse School headed notepaper, one a mourning letter which refers to the ‘Zepp raid’ and a fire at nearby Broadwater “in which I earned but did not gain the V.C. for… bravery, in directing a stream of fire-quencher from a nozzle weighing 3 tons…”

A further 6 letters, one a mourning letter, addressed to ‘Seligman’, some pre-war, some mid war.

The album appears to have been owned by the recipient of these letters, Vincent Julian Seligman (1886-1972), a contemporary of Graves’ who saw active service in the Gallipoli campaign and also in Salonika, Greece.

A fascinating series of photographs and selection of ephemera dating to the Great War, relating to Robert Graves and his contemporaries during their school days at Charterhouse.

Unique.

SKU: 1800220

https://foldthecornerbooks.co.uk/products/charterhouse-school-an-album-of-school-photos-and-ephemeral-items-1800220
