Alongside the title story, such classic tales as ‘The Tinder Box’, ‘The Emperor’s New Clothes’, ‘Thumbelina’, ‘The Steadfast Tin Soldier’ and ‘The Ugly Duckling’ can be found. A loose newspaper clipping from the New York Times Book Review, celebrating Andersen’s 120th anniversary, printed March 29th 1925, is also loosely inserted. \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe English painter and illustrator John Reinhard Weguelin (1849 – 1927) specialised in figurative painting strongly inspired by classical antiquity, mythology, and pastoral scenes. Using both oil and watercolour, he supplemented his income through illustration, with one of his early commissions being  Macaulay's \u003ci\u003eLays of Ancient Rome\u003c\/i\u003e. Weguelin became known for his images of nymphs and mermaids, as well as his nudes, so he was perhaps a clear choice for this edition of Han Andersen’s \u003ci\u003eLittle Mermaid\u003c\/i\u003e. Here, the illustrations show a series of scenes incorporating nymphs and mythical creatures, both in and out of water.
