Initially writing poetry and drama, her debut novel Purple Hibiscus achieved great commercial success, and Half of a Yellow Sun followed three years later. Adiche spent four years researching and writing the novel, which centres on the Biafran conflict during the Nigerian Civil War, and incorporates many of her father's memories of that time period.
