A series of novels for young adults followed, before, in 2001, La sombra del viento [The Shadow of the Wind] was first released to the world. Zafon was strongly influenced by 19th century classics, crime fiction, and noir authors, and his novels echo this fact. Born in Barcelona, many of his works are set on the dark and gothic backdrops of the city, with the twisted streets and characters in his stories become synonymous with each other - interlocking storylines, mysterious fires, figures watching in the shadows, doomed and fated love, hidden libraries and much more besides. El juego del ángel, [The Angel's Game]; El prisionero del cielo, 2011 [The Prisoner of Heaven]; and El laberinto de los espíritus, [The Labyrinth of Spirits] followed Shadow in quick succession, with the stories in each of the books designed to be read in any order, with overlapping characters and story arcs across generations bringing depth and further intrigue as each was published.

For a translator, Zafon chose Lucia Graves, daughter of the poet Robert Graves, who lends a sympathetic and highly poetic perspective to the author’s already highly evocative language.

When Zafon died in 2018, the world lost a singularly great writer, one who has been compared to Cervantes, Dumas and Wilkie Collins in terms of influence and scope. After receiving a masters degree at Trinity College, Dublin, she became interested in Theosophy, and became an early member of the Hermetic Society, where she became associated with a series of Irish writers including George William Russell. She subsequently became one of his select group of protégés known as the "singing birds". Her first volume of poems was published in 1906, and her first work of Irish folklore, The Coming of Lugh, was published in 1909, the first collaboration with her friend, the revolutionary and suffragette Maud Gonne. The present volume followed one year later. Young is best remembered today for her folk-lore, which she continued to write about in earnest following a series of fairy experiences. She later wrote that: "from childhood I heard tales of ghosts, banshees, haunted castles, mischievous and friendly sprites, snatches of ballads, and political arguments ... It was not until I came to Dublin…that I realized what a heritage waited for me in Celtic literature. I read every translation I could get, learned Irish, and betook myself to Gaelic Ireland where, by turf fires, I could hear the poems of the Fianna recited by folk who had heard the faery music and had danced in faery circles ..."

Maud Gonne was a friend and lover to W. B. Yeats, and through him she began to be involved with the occultist circles in which he moved, developing a strong interest in reincarnation. In 1891 she too briefly joined the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. Her deeply evocative images here have deeply spiritualist undertones, with altars, mothers and children and nymph-like gods alongside recurring images of swans.

Together, Young and Gonne produce a deeply spiritual and mystical work based on their knowledge of Irish fairy tales. She married Captain George Phelan in 1813 and spent two years with him while he served with his regiment in Nova Scotia before returning to Ireland. The marriage was an unhappy one, prone to acts of violence, and Tonna began to write under the name ‘Charlotte Elizabeth’ to protect her writing from her husband. They separated in 1824 and she later remarried.

Tonna began writing after her father’s death, in an attempt to support her mother. She believed that it was her mission in life to convert non-believers and protestants to Evangelical Protestantism, and so much of her work was religious, although later in life she began to write more widely on the subject of social change. In particular, she was passionate about the poor working conditions of female workers in London, and she also wrote about cotton mill child labour workers. Her concern for the social and economic conditions of women expressed in her writing helped gather support for passage of the London Factory Acts of 1844, 1847, and 1848, which regulated and improved the conditions of industrial workers. She was an early supporter of animal welfare and her Kindness to Animals, Or, The Sin of Cruelty Exposed and Rebuked was published in 1845, shortly before her untimely death.

The present letter was written in 1835 to the editor of ‘The Record’, a prominent British evangelical religious and conservative newspaper which had been founded in 1828 and reported on ecclesiastical news, religious debates, social reform, missionary work, and general Victorian domestic and foreign news from an explicitly Christian perspective. Typical of her fervent passion for protestantism, the letter is strongly religious in tone, and she writes of animal cruelty: “I was not, until recently, aware how much is being attempted, how much actually done, to interpose between the tormentor and his defenceless victim”. She also refers to her abhorrence at the “fearful traffic in slaves some forty years ago” and quotes “the righteous man regardeth the life of his beast” - is not the blood the life? By this time, he had amalgamated a series of interviews with important party leaders, and the book was to be the first to report to the West first-hand accounts of Communist-controlled areas which had emerged during the Long March. Stationed at the communist headquarters at Bao'an, he spent four months interviewing Mao and other Communist leaders, where he took dictation of Mao Zedong’s autobiography, the proofs of which were later carefully edited. In the Autumn of 1936 he published a first short account in the China Weekly Review, and the first appearance in book form was published in English by Gollancz the following year. L.”

Lowell was born in 1855, and graduated from Harvard in 1876 with distinction in mathematics. With a strong interest in astronomy, his graduation speech concerned the nebular hypothesis (the most widely accepted theory concerning the origins of the universe), still considered to be quite groundbreaking at the time. After travelling extensively in Asia as a diplomat and writing a series of travel books, Lowell returned to America in 1893, determined to study the planet Mars. In particular, his interest stemmed from the writings of the astronomer Giovanni Schiaparelli, who first postulated that there may be canals on the Martian surface. Using his wealth and influence, Lowell founded an observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona, and began to observe the heavens. For the following 15 years he made intricate drawings of the lines appearing on the surface of the planet, many of which are reproduced in his first work on the subject, Mars, which appeared in 1985 to great commercial success.

Mars and Its Canals followed in 1906, and contained a printed dedication to Schiaparelli ‘the Columbus of a new planetary world’. This second work continued Lowell’s hypothesis concerning the existence of these canal-like structures, and through his theories he undoubtedly contributed to the advancement of astronomy, the discovery of the planet Pluto (in 1930 by Clyde Tombaugh), and to popular literature (it is said that H. G. Wells’ ‘War of the Worlds’ was directly inspired by his findings, with the author making the quite natural conclusion that aliens from a dying planet may well wish to invade another). Some of the most interesting hypotheses in this second work are found in the chapters on Vegetation (in which he postulates that the observable blue-green areas of the planet are not oceans, but vast forests), and ‘Life’ (concluding that the presence of water and other forms of life necessitate further intelligent beings).

The final book, Mars as the Abode of Life was published just two years later, and developed out of a series of lectures given by Lowell at the Lowell institute. So popular were these talks that the audience spilled out of the lecture theatres, and they had to be repeated again in the afternoons, with just as many in attendance. First published in Century Magazine, they then appeared in book form in 1908. The subjects take as their focus planetary evolution; how Mars came to be and how it differs from Earth.

Of all of his theories, Lowell is perhaps best remembered today for popularising the belief that the martian canals were built by extra-terrestrial life in order to tap into melting polar ice caps. It wasn’t until 1960 that it was proven, by NASA, that the ‘canals’ were in fact an optical illusion.

Rare as a set, even more so with the handwritten notecard.

SKU: 1800237

“PAST THE CHROME GRIN OF THE CAR’S WIDE RADIATOR GRILLE CAN BE GLIMPSED THE JAWS OF HELL ITSELF”

8vo., black publisher’s boards, spine lettered typographically in gilt to spine with publisher’s device to foot; housed in the original unclipped pictorial dustwrapper (£8.95 net to front flap) featuring an illustration by Gerald Grace and a design by Ian Hughes; pp. [viii], 482, [vi]; the book near-fine, tiny bump to foot of spine and a couple of light spots to the upper edge of the text block and the first couple of prelim pages; the wrapper similarly near-fine, a couple of light creases and scratches, with corner crease to front flap, possibly to once obscure the price. At the end of that year, she began to write her first work of lesbian fiction, which would later become The Well of Loneliness. The plot follows Stephen Gordon, a masculine lesbian who, like Hall, identifies as an ‘invert’. Despite the lack of sexual content, the book was immediately subject to an obscenity trial, with James Douglas, editor of the Sunday Express, famously writing that "I would rather give a healthy boy or a healthy girl a phial of prussic acid than this novel." The British court judged it obscene because of its defence of "unnatural practices between women", and the verdict ordered the immediate destruction of all copies of the book. It was not published again in England until 1949, though in the US it was printed after a lengthy court battle. Happily the trial, if anything, did more to increase awareness surrounding homosexuality than suppress it, and it became known as the first source of information about lesbianism that young people could find. It is now considered to be the predecessor to the golden age of lesbian pulp fiction.

The American Anthropological Society adds that The Well of Loneliness is “the most striking contribution to English letters since James Joyce’s Ulysses, and because of its suppression in the land of its birth, one of the most discussed books of modern times.”

A rather scarce, early edition of this highly important banned book.

SKU: 1800234

graves-robert-john-kemp-s-wager-in-the-british-drama-league-library-of-modern-british-drama-no-11-1800233
GRAVES, Robert John Kemp’s Wager [in] The British Drama League Library of Modern British Drama, No. 11

Small 8vo., parchment-backed paper-covered boards with onlaid decorative title labels printed in green and black to both covers; spine lettered in gilt; outer edges untrimmed; contained, unusually, in the original publisher’s glassine; pp. [x], xi-xv, [i], 75, [v]; an excellent, near-fine example with just a hint of rubbing to the outer edges of boards and the odd spot internally; seemingly unread, with many pages entirely unopened; the glassine with some nicks and short closed tears; chip to foot of spine; seldom found at all.

Limited edition. The plot follows Kemp as he accepts a wager to perform a series of musical and physical tasks which include Morris dancing, fighting and more. Graves intended for the play to be set to music, and in one recorded letter wrote that he had the specific notion of commissioning Vaughan Williams to write the corresponding opera - a project which sadly never came to fruition.

Written just a few years after the end of the Second World War, the play represents a specific shift in Graves’ influences, embodying the mythical, poetic and traditional elements which would later define his writing style.

One of Graves’ more obscure plays, and this particular example early in the limitation run. Rare with the glassine.

SKU: 1800233

Large 8vo., sandy-coloured boards lettered in metallic blue to spine; map endpapers showing the Southern Blue Ridge Mountains; together in the matching unclipped dustwrapper (£14.99 to front flap); with a photograph by Eric Rank; pp. [viii], 357, [iii]; a little bumped at spine tips, but otherwise a fine copy in the near-fine dustwrapper which is just a little sunned to the backstrip.

First UK edition, with full number line 1-10. It was during this time that he began to write Cold Mountain, a novel set during the American Civil War which follows W. P. Inman, a wounded deserter, in his attempts to walk for months across the mountains and countryside to reunite with the woman he loves. It was at the behest of his wife (who encouraged him to quit teaching in order to focus on writing) and after the backing from his friend and author Kaye Gibbons (who presented his unfinished novel to her literary agency), that the novel was eventually published. Evoking striking descriptions of the North Carolina landscape which the author called home, the work drew strongly both on local history, and stories passed down from Frazier’s father and great-great-uncle, the latter whom in fact inspired the protagonist, having served in the confederate army and who did indeed desert after being wounded twice in action.

The book was an instant success, selling over three million copies worldwide. This copy no. 72.

The early life of John Cleland is mostly unrecorded. Born in Kingston, he attended Westminster School before being employed in the service of the East India Company. He lived in Bombay until 1740, when he travelled back to England, destitute and unemployed. By 1748 his fortunes had fallen so much further that he was imprisoned for unpaid debts. It is likely that Fanny Hill had been written in several installments before this time, but it was finalised while Cleland was serving his year of time in Fleet prison.

The plot centres around Frances 'Fanny' Hill, by then a rich English woman, who is asked to recount the exploits of her early life through a series of letters to an unnamed acquaintance. The reader follows Fanny through her first experiences of a brothel, her first love and a series of sexual experiences with multiple partners, both men and women. These include the loss of her virginity, group activities and sado-masochism.

The first editions of the book appeared in installments, with the first published in November 1748 and the second in February 1749. Cleland’s release from prison in March 1749 was unsurprisingly short lived when he was arrested again, along with the publisher and printer of Fanny Hill, in November of the same year. He subsequently disavowed the book, claiming in court that he "wish[ed] from my Soul", that the book be "buried and forgot". It was withdrawn and not legally published again for over a hundred years, although it of course continued to sell well in pirated editions. It remained suppressed in an unexpurgated form until 1962 in the US, and 1970 in the UK.

Fanny Hill is of particular note for its clever use of language and its use of euphemism. Explicit language and swear words are completely absent, and Cleland uses literary devices to describe genitalia (referring, in several instances, to a woman’s ‘nethermouth’). Indeed in a later letter to Boswell in 1772, Cleland claimed that he had first written Fanny Hill whilst in Bombay, in an attempt to demonstrate that it was possible to write about prostitution without using vulgar terms.

This particular edition is notable for its erotic plates, which were reserved for subscribers only. In 1794 during the French Revolutionary Wars, members of the 29th Regiment of Foot fought aboard a series of ships including HMS Brunswick, where they suffered considerable losses but eventually achieved a great Naval victory. They were subsequently permitted to bear the Naval Crown and the anniversary became one of the regiment’s greatest traditions. The regiment was later amalgamated in 1881 with two others to become the Worcesters.

The 1st Battalion Worcestershire Regiment went on to serve in Malaya during the Malayan Emergency, arriving in Singapore in June 1950 and undertaking a three-year tour. At the time, Churchill was leader of the opposition, having lost the 1945 election. He would reprise the role of Prime Minister in October 1951. On 1st June the HMS Worcester held its First of June ceremony, during which time anniversary greetings were sent via telegrams, one directly to Churchill. The commanding officer at the time was A. H. Gilmore.

This particularly charming response is poignant. Born in England in 1850, he set sail for Japan in 1873, and upon landing he was employed first by the Japanese Government, before he began to teach at the Imperial Japanese Naval Academy in Tokyo from 1874 to 1882. Later, he became professor of Japanese at Tokyo Imperial University, beginning in 1886.

Chamberlain is perhaps best known today for his beautiful translations of Japanese folk tales into English. The Japanese Fairy Tale Series was a run of an intended 23 classic stories which included among them such tales as The Silly Jelly-Fish, Urashima, The Serpent with Eight Heads, and My Lord Bag-o'-Rice. These were published by Kobunsha in Tokyo towards the end of the 19th century, and the publisher employed a series of talented English writers residing in Japan to complete the translations. Beautifully arranged and printed, they included woodblock prints based on those of the Meiji period and were bought chiefly as gifts by foreign travellers or by those wishing to learn about Japanese culture.

Chamberlain also issued a very limited series of Aino Folk-Tales, which appeared in a run of just 3 books; The Hunter in Fairy-Land, The Birds' Party and The Man who Lost his Wife. Intended as a supplement to the fairy tale series, Chamberlain gathered indigenous oral traditions from the Ainu people of Hokkaido for the content, and they later appeared together in a dedicated 1888 collection for the Folk-lore Society. The first story follows a hunter as he searches for a bear in the snowy mountains. Following it into a cave, he reappears in fairy land, where he eats some of the fruits and is transformed into a snake. When a fairy appears to him in a dream, she tells him that the only way he can escape his plight is to fling himself from the top of a very tall pine tree. After he becomes a man again, he discovers that the bear was actually a fairy luring him to the mystical land to marry him. The second story is much shorter, and is a moral tale about two pigeons who decide to host a dinner party - but because they do not invite everyone, a jealous crow drops a large stone on them from above and the feast is ruined. The last two pages inform the reader that the story was subsequently set to music by a celebrated Japanese composer, and shows a coloured woodcut beneath representing the performance.

Exceedingly scarce on the open market.

SKU: 1800219

THE WORD ‘ROBOT’ USED FOR THE FIRST TIME

8vo., original glued black wraps lettered in red to upper cover; pp. [v], 6-102, [ii, ads.]; an excellent and fresh example, covers a little sunned at edges and along spine, with one small chip to the upper right hand corner of front cover.

First UK edition, translated by P. First written in 1920 under the title Rossumovi Univerzální Roboti, it premiered on the 2nd January 1921 in Hradec Králové, Czechia. The play begins in a factory which produces artificial people - ‘Robots’ - similar in conception to modern androids, who look and act like humans, and are sometimes even mistaken for them. Initially happy to be subservient to people, the robots end up staging a revolt, killing all but one of their masters. Attempting to reproduce proves disastrous - their attempts at replication leave them with nothing but bloody chunks of meat - until two of them fall in love.

In England the play was first produced in London by the Reandean Company. It was performed at St. Martin’s theatre in April 1923, produced by Basil Dean and with scenery designed by George W. By the 1890s she had married and bought a house in England, from which she wrote The Secret Garden. Part romance, part melodrama, the dark, moral tone of A Lady of Quality made it the second highest-selling novel in the U.S. in the year of publication. As a young woman arriving into Restoration society, she must choose between a series of suitors, some of whom will test her independence and courage which threaten both her reputation and happiness. “A Lady of Quality is a novel about the invincibility of the human spirit” the publisher Pan Macmillan later wrote of their new edition “...the refusal of a woman to be mild and submissive, the acceptance of all experience, and courage born of adversity.”

Such lengthy manuscript notes by Burnett are uncommon thus.

SKU: 1800217

BRONTE, Charlotte Jane Eyre. Ballard and his family had moved into the centre of the city in 1937, but after the battle of Hong Kong the Imperial Japanese Army occupied the International Settlement and imprisoned its Allied civilians, sending Ballard’s family, along with many others, to the Lunghua Civilian Assembly Centre. They lived there for the remainder of the war, and it was this very displacement that formed the basis for the novel. “I don't think you can go through the experience of war without one's perceptions of the world being forever changed”, Ballard later wrote, “the reassuring stage-set that everyday reality in the suburban West presents to us is torn down; you see the ragged scaffolding, and then you see the truth beyond that, and it can be a frightening experience. I have—I won't say happy—[but] not unpleasant memories of the camp... Old Woman quoth I / Oh wither Oh Wither Oh Wither so high / “To sweep the cobwebs out of the sky / And I’ll be with you again by and bye’; printed beneath is an additional note ‘NB the purchasers of this work may rely upon receiving the earliest information of the return of the Old Woman’; additional advertisement for ‘The Pictorial Humpty Dumpty’ printed to rear board; the rhyme itself printed to a folding sheet to the inside cover describing each individual plate; a bright example, with a few marks and chips to edges, as is common; the plates with archival tape reinforcement to versos; a few chips and marks; all plates present and complete; some darkening and rubbing to boards as expected; an excellent survival.

A scarce and rather beautiful handcoloured panorama of this children’s rhyme, which follows the old woman as she begins her voyage into the skies, tossed up by men who ‘full mischievouslie disposed’ bore her aloft by means of a blanket; how she encounters much rain; how she passes a man ‘with lanthorne dogge & bushe of thorne presentying moonshine as Maister Will Shakespeare saith’; showing her knitting as she passes the dog star which barks at her as she goes by; representing her being attacked by various birds and beasts (and fending them off with her broom); passing many moons, and finally, as she arrives at her destination, she is able to carry out the task in hand, cleaning the skies “which she findeth full loathsome by some reason of the manie & great spyders which have for long time bygone woven their webbes therein.”

The rhyme dates back to as early as the 17th century, but Alquis’ enigmatic illustrations have become over time the most popular and recognisable depictions. Designed to be ‘read’ from the bottom up, it is likely that the engraver was inspired by George Cruikshank's famous 1849 horizontal panorama, The Toothache.

‘Alquis’ was the pseudonym for The Rev. Samuel Edward Maberly (1818–1848), an English clergyman, artist, and rower who served as the first president of the Oxford University Book Club in 1843. The V&A reports that Lewis Carroll's family owned a copy of Maberly's Pictorial Humpty Dumpty, and that it is highly probable that Maberly’s unique visual interpretation served as Carroll's direct inspiration for the character of Humpty Dumpty in Through the Looking-Glass.

A striking publication. Scarce complete, with Copac recording just the Oxford and V&A copies; no further copies on OCLC.

SKU: 1800209

8vo., red boards lettered in black to spine with publisher’s device to foot; turquoise endpapers; together in the unclipped pictorial dustwrapper featuring a striking wraparound image in full colour; pp. [xii], 5-433, [vii]; essentially a fine copy, just a couple of small marks/scratches, and very minimal creasing to the edges of the wrapper.

First edition, boldly signed by the author to the title page.

Adiche was born in Nigeria and studied medicine at University before travelling to the U.S. for further education at Drexel University Eastern Connecticut State, Johns Hopkins and Yale. Initially writing poetry and drama, her debut novel Purple Hibiscus achieved great commercial success, and Half of a Yellow Sun followed three years later. Adiche spent four years researching and writing the novel, which centres on the Biafran conflict during the Nigerian Civil War, and incorporates many of her father's memories of that time period. The plot moves between the lives of several characters - Ugwu, a teenage boy who has moved from his village to work for Odenigbo, a university lecturer with revolutionary views; Olanna, the beautiful daughter of a wealthy Nigerian man from Lagos, with whom Odenigbo is in love; and Richard, a tall shy Englishman in thrall to Olanna’s sister - all of whom are affected in varying ways by the outbreak of the conflict.

In 2007, the book won the Women’s Prize for Fiction.

SKU: 1800208

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0943/8711/0212/collections/York_cover_JPG_aa97d5cd-eab1-473b-b3f9-90f9d13d56b6.jpg?v=1788686384
