Charles van Sandwyk was born in South Africa, and met Waisiki while living in Fiji. After emigrating to Canada, the author and illustrator invited Waisiki to join him in both work (producing the very book we have before us, and countless others at the press), and in exploration. Together, the pair began to venture outdoors, experiencing first hand the beauty of their new-found home; the Rockies, icy lakes, hot springs and coastal fjords which surrounded them, as well as the many diverse animals which inhabited the land. The book contains a poem to the country, accompanied by evocative illustrations of salmon, polar bears, cougars, and several nods to the humble beaver, along with many others. “[We] are both from distant lands”, Waisiki writes, “yet we have been made to feel welcome here. We wished to find a way to speak to the heart of Canada since it has spoken so eloquently to us”. The book is dedicated to the kindness and courtesy of those Canadian people.

A stunning publication, and perhaps this bookseller’s favourite to have been produced by the Charles van Sandwyk press.

VAN SANDWYK, Charles

Days are a Dream

[Vancouver: Charles van Sandwyk Fine Arts, 2019]

8vo., cream hand-sewn card covers; pp. [viii], with rear cover folding; text printed calligraphically throughout, as well as watercolour illustration and publisher’s device to upper cover; as well as a further 8 in full colour throughout, all bordered in red; with numbered copper proof etching showing a dragonfly tipped-in to the inside front cover; fine.

First edition thus, signed by van Sandwyk.

A nostalgic work, derived from journal entries created by the writer while living on the tiny island of Tavewa, Fiji. Many of his friends and colleagues are depicted in animalistic form in a charming illustration to the gatefold.

“Life is very short; life is fleeting; but life is grand”

VAN SANDWYK, Charles

An original, handmade Christmas decoration showing crescent and full moons.

North Vancouver: Charles van Sandwyk Fine Arts, [2025]

An original, handmade, double-sided round christmas decoration (11cm total diameter) showing, on one side, a smiling crescent moon; As a child he would play in the garden of his grandparent’s home, and was fascinated by the world of these ‘little people’. “The flowerbeds were filled with [them]”, he later wrote (in the Folio Society edition of ‘How to see Fairies’). “Near the composting heap, there were no less than three secret Goblin mines, replete with magnificent treasure. Beneath the surface of the pond lived the merpeople, and my poor grandparents didn’t even know it”. Here, Van Sandwyk provides, with his customary charming drawings, a poem dedicated to the fairy market, where elves and treefolk confer with mice, hedgehogs and bumblebees to buy and sell produce, with such delicacies as fruits, wines and jellies.

VAN SANDWYK, Charles

After Glow

Vancouver: The Fairy Press, 2008

Oblong 8vo., cream card wraps, fully decorated with coloured illustrations of plants, insects and fairy folk; sewn binding with decorative rainbow-coloured ribbon; front cover with onlaid maroon label decorated in black and gold; the front and rear covers folding, with tri-fold panorama to front; an additional pp [iv] pages of calligraphic text and illustrations; fold-ins with outer edge untrimmed; fine.

First edition of this autumnal poem.

After Glow describes the secret realm of the little people, and the illustrations here show many of those characters eating, drinking generally merrymaking, some wearing masks, and others playing tiny violins and french horns fashioned from flowers.

VAN SANDWYK, Charles

Mr Rabbit’s Christmas Wish

Vancouver: Charles van Sandwyk Fine Arts, 2007

8vo., black card covers with white fleck and integrated gold wrapper; printed with holly design in black and gold, printed gilt label and onlaid rabbit design to upper cover; sewn along spine; dark green endpapers with repeat rabbit design in gilt; [unpaginated]; printed on different colour paper stocks throughout with calligraphic text, numerous line drawings, and 8 onlaid plates of animals with decorative borders; fine.

First edition, with the gold card covers.

A sweet little book which recounts Mr. Rabbit’s Christmas wishes through his translator, the author. Charles van Sandwyk was born in South Africa, and met Waisiki while living in Fiji. After emigrating to Canada, Charles invited Waisiki to join him in both work (producing the very book we have before us, and countless others at the press), and in exploration.
